Gently Falls the Bakula| An Honest Review

Book name:Gently Falls the Bakula

Author- Sudha Murty

Gently Falls the Bakula written by Sudha Murty, who is one of the finest writers of India, which is dedicated to all those women who allowed family commitments and responsibilities to overpower their own aspirations, as she tells us in the very beginning. The story begins with how much Shrimati loved History, as she wins an Essay Competition, and Shrikant always took her as a rival, due to their inherited enmity. Both the Deshpande families were enemies because of the difference in their sects. But Shrimati never ever let the seed of enmity grow inside her, while travelling after their results, they meet each other by chance and it was then Shrikant proposed an idea of friendship. The Bakula tree signified their bond, which eventually turned into love.

The challenge begins when Shrikant becomes too ambitious for power, status and money, and little by little he started taking Shrimati for granted, neglecting her sacrifices and even her love for History, though this hardly have any effect on Shrikant, Shrimati loses herself in this misery, she becomes depressed. But Shrikant had no time for her, taking her problems as irrational and emotional. Slowly slowly he becomes more and more ambitious, detoriating their relationship.

The book portrays how our society takes the sacrifices of women for granted and how they think women as a complete shadow of their husbands. She breaks the stereotype of this cultural bias and portrays Shrimati as a powerful and sensible woman. As the story ends we realize how we take the love and sacrifices of each woman for granted.

I will definitely recommend this book, only one thing I missed, the Bakula tree in the later book. Other than that the book really stands out and brings tears in the reader's eye.
